Roots

“…I’ve got no roots
But my home was never on the ground…
…I like standing still but that’s just a wishful plan
Ask me where I come from, I’ll say a different land
But I’ve got memories and travel like gypsies in the night…
…It’s just the place that changes, the rest is still the same…
…And a thousand times I’ve seen this road
A thousand times…”*

I knew I loved this song’s catchy beat and the lyrics reminded me of my own life. But I always wondered if I was interpreting the words the way the songwriter really meant. I decided to look up the lyrics, and was shocked when I found the author’s bio and reason for the song. She wrote the song feeling like she had no place to call home, as she had parents of two different nationalities and moved frequently. No wonder it resonates with me! I’ve lived on 3 continents, 5 countries, 5 states, at least 14 towns, and don’t care to count the number of houses, or moves. Now we’re staring another transition in the face.

This song has been running through my head while I process these changes and grieve being root-less, but then the other morning I had a revelation, “I DO have roots!”

I may feel like I don’t, but I do. I have roots in Christ, and He will not change or move, so those roots won’t ever be upended.

“ They will be like a tree planted near a stream whose roots spread out toward the water. It has nothing to fear when the heat comes. Its leaves are always green. It has no need to be concerned in a year of drought. It does not stop bearing fruit.” Jer. 17:8 (Reading this in context is even better as it compares it to a “shrub in the dessert.”
