The day was drizzly, the rain came off and on. I stood by the path as marathoners ran by. My husband being one of them. As I stood there watching, one runner threw a jacket at me and shouted,” You can keep it!”
Many runners had started the race with jackets, but after a while no longer needed them. The extra clothing then became cumbersome. So cumbersome that people like this man was even willing to give up his jacket forever. I took it home and looked it up online; it was a pricey brand.
For the sake of the race and to be able to run well, the athlete was willing to throw an expensive coat aside. It reminded me of what the author of Hebrews said, “…we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set our for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…” Hebrews 12:1b-2a NET.
Our family is getting ready for a move and therefore sorting through and decluttering everything. We purge, then purge some more, then purge again! I think of how the things that remain after all of these purges are the things I really like. The clothes that fit perfectly, the books I refer to regularly, the cards and pictures from my kids that can’t be replaced. These are the things I really cherish, the important things.
I hope this time serves to help me declutter more than just my physical junk. I hope it helps me declutter unnecessary time wasters, worries that don’t help anything, and whatever else holds me back from what really, truly matters for eternity.

I may be burning a whole bunch of old notebooks, but my journals will be kept!
