Since I shared that I’m viewing my job right now as making our dollars stretch, I thought it’d be fun to share some of the ways I’m doing that on a weekly basis. Personally I’ve really enjoyed reading this type of post at The Frugal Girl, The Prudent Homemaker and The Non-Consumer Advocate, so why not do it here on my own blog?
I worked on gardening. The more I do, the more I realize there’s a lot to learn! One frugal trick I tried was making this tiny green house to start some arugula seeds in. Will it be successful? I’ve yet to find out! The egg carton came free from a neighbor. Someone gave him the carton full of fresh eggs, but he says he doesn’t eat them, so we accepted the eggs and after gobbling them up, I thought I could reuse the carton. I planted the seeds in the cardboard carton. At some point I had purchased a container of baby spinach that had been marked down. I saved this plastic container also thinking it might be a good little green house. We’ll see how it turns out.

Eating at home. Another frugal thing I’ve been up to is cooking. We had family visiting the last couple of days. We did take them out for Dairy Queen blizzards (and unsuccessfully tried to get the 85 cent blizzard deal). Other than that all the meals we had together were cooked or grilled here at home. I had help, so it wasn’t just me cooking. We had a couple of meals of just sandwiches. One sandwich meal we took to the park and had a picnic.
I got a $5 giftcard. I earned enough fetch rewards for another $5 giftcard. While it takes me a while of taking pictures of reciepts to work up to enough for giftcard, it’s super easy, so worth it to me.
We had some free fun. As mentioned previously, we had a picnic. But we also watched a DVD that we had been given and played a couple of games we already owned. We went on a walk one evening and just enjoyed sitting around talking while family visited.
My son accepted some hand-me-downs. His uncle was getting rid of some clothes, so my son looked through them and picked out 3 items to keep. He’s wearing one of the shirts right now!
What money-saving activities have you been up to?
