Frugal Five

Since I shared that I’m viewing my job right now as making our dollars stretch, I thought it’d be fun to share some of the ways I’m doing that on a weekly basis. Personally I’ve really enjoyed reading this type of post at The Frugal Girl, The Prudent Homemaker and The Non-Consumer Advocate, so why not do it here on my own blog?

Hair cuts from students. This week 3 of us got hair cuts/trims from students. The cosmotology school my daughter and I went to charged $10 per cut and won’t accept tips. My son went to a barber school where they charge $5. So much cheaper than a regular salon!

Sold unused chain link fence. Remember how I said my husband purchased chain link fence to make an area for the dog? The leftover fence we didn’t need I posted on fb and it sold for $45. Clutter out of our back yard, someone else got fencing they were looking for, and we made a little money back, a win all around!

My husband’s handyman business not only has started bringing money in, but some of the things he’s asked to haul off are useful to us, like that bathtub we’re growing cucumber plants in now. This week, he came home with a bunch of good soil and leaves for the compost bins. The dirt in our yard is very sandy, so I’m grateful for this good soil.

Didn’t have to water the plants as much this week due to rain. Not that I have any control over that, but I’m thankful for it! Speaking of watering the plants, my husband planted the mint right where our air conditioner drips and it’s thriving there!

Borrowed a DVD from the library. Every Friday night is Friday Family Film night at our house. This week we watched the library’s copy of Radio. I popped ridiculous amounts of popcorn and we had fruit roll ups. This family tradition is one our kids look forward to every weekend, and it’s cheap!

What did you do this week to save some money?
