My Top 5 Grocery Store Items

Daily writing prompt
List your top 5 grocery store items.

I clicked through some daily writing prompts and decided to answer this one. Here’s 5 of the items I purchase frequently:

Rice – I like to purchase parboiled rice. We eat rice a couple of times a week, we ate it almost daily when living in Africa. I love rice and all the many sauces you can top it with!

Potatoes – A big sac of taters is a great deal economically! I like to bake up 2 sheets of potatoes at a time. That’s way more than we eat in a meal, but the leftovers make great fries, cooked into eggs, or fried and tossed in a burrito. I like to use this method to bake my big batch of potatoes.

Waffles and cranberry sauce and fried potatoes with homemade Raising Cane Sauce.

Beans – Protein, fiber and cheap! I like lentils, pinto beans, chickpeas (check out this way to cook them), black eyed peas, the options abound! I prefer dry beans, as they’re cheaper, but canned beans are handy in a pinch.

Bread – We eat lots of bread. I really miss the baguettes of Africa! Sometimes I make homemade bread, but lately I’ve been just grabbing up the clearance breads at Wal-Mart.

Cabbage – Cabbage lasts longer than lettuce. Cabbage is crunchy. Cabbage ramen salad is yummy. Shredded cabbage is a nice topping to many soups. Cabbage fills up a burrito. These are just a few of the reasons we almost always have cabbage in our fridge.

How about you? What are your top 5 grocery items?
