One of the daily writing prompts on WordPress asked, ” What animals make the best/worst pets?”
My answer for the best pet is gonna surprise you…..
It’s little…
It’s wiggly…
It’s squirmy…
It’s a worm!!! Actually lots of worms!
After hearing Internet Shaquille talk about worms, my husband really wanted to get some for our compost. He eventually ordered some from Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm and then ordered another batch when they went on a sale! It’s a lot of worms, but don’t worry, he shared some with his mom. A gift every mom wants! So now the 2 weirdest things we’ve ever received in the mail are live shrimp and live worms.
Here’s what I can tell you, we had 2 sets of compost. One was made with a wire fencing in a cylinder shape and we’d toss kitchen scraps and yard clippings in it. Another was a couple of tubs with worms. I’d alternate which compost I tossed our kitchen scraps, yard clippings and shredded paper in. Let me tell you from personal experience…the worms transform the trash into rich, dark compost much quicker than the the other compost bin!
It baffles me….I take our trash and give it to the worms. They take that trash and turn it into free, phenomenal compost. That compost gets put in the garden to make food. I’ll harvest that food and toss that food’s scraps into the the worm bin….and on and on it goes!

See where we put food for the worms in the center?

Same garden bed, different angle and with wood covering the worm hole. Click the link above to watch a video on how to have someting like this in your garden bed.
I think squirmy worms are a little gross…but I sure appreciate the work they do for me! God gave them an important job!

Hidden behind that pallet are two tubs full of compost and worms!
Even though this post was about our worm pets, I really do love Bruno!

One of his hobbies is picking a really good chewing stick from the woodpile and going to town on it!
And we love Nacho too!

His hobby is getting in the way…and he’s proficient at it!
And we love our fish too!

Okay, in all honesty, I don’t think worms are THE BEST pet. Can there really be one best pet? But I thought this was a great opportunity to share with you our worm journey. 🙂
