Frugal Five

My husband’s been the deal finder lately.

He got some cedar pickets to put a fence up around our back yard. He spotted them on facebook for $1 a piece. He said at a home improvement store they’d be around $2000, but he spent $400. Now that’s what I call a savings! They aren’t in as good of shape, but still very usable. Maybe once our fence is up I’ll do a “My Frugal Yard” post.

He also got 14 foot 2 by 4s. Normally the amount he bought would be $800 from a store, but he paid $500. He even said these are in great condition!

I cooked and ate careless weed from the yard! My mother-in-law inspired me by doing so from it growing in her yard. The first time I did it, I cooked it in leftover pot-likker from this collard melt recipe(which my husband requested for his birthday meal). The second time I made it, I just sauteed it with some onion and then scrambled eggs into it. Free food! Didn’t even have to plant it!

For the 4th of July we went to a park and listened to live music and watched fireworks. It was all free, except the waters I bought…next time I’ll bring our own.

We’re eating plenty of cucumbers from the garden! And I learned how to pollinate zucchinis, which I did yesterday. Apparently if you’re zucchinis keep turning yellow, it might be because they’re not getting pollinated! I had no idea, but thanks to the knowledgeable people on the internet, I’m hoping for better results now.

What things have you done lately to save a buck?

  1. What a great selection of frugal things!

We have a wedding to attend next weekend. I have some dresses I’ve owned for a while, but was feeling the urge to have something new and a bit more fitting for the theme of the wedding. While sourcing my daughter shoes for said wedding (she’s a bridesmaid), I found a navy/floral dress that’s long and flowy and feels PERFECT for this weeding at a thrift store. Both the shoes and dress together cost less than $10. Felt like a huge win.

Golf is an expensive sport, but my son has been wanting to golf. My husband found a VERY inexpensive Par 3 where kids 10 and under were free. We borrowed clubs for our son, my husband had two thrifted clubs, I didn’t play (but did hunt for golf balls while they played so we came home with more golf balls than when we started)…so it was a very economical adventure that was fun to boot.

As always, lots of reduced price food from the grocery store. Bread that has been discounted, some items that were nearing best-before dates that I put into the freezer for use at a later time.
