Maximum Joy – First John – Relationship or Fellowship?

By David R. Anderson

Overall I liked this book. There were sections that I thought were excellent and helped me understand things from the book of 1 John. I loved that the author walked you through a book of the Bible step by step. But then there were other sections where he said things that I don’t really think I agree on. So, I guess what I’d say, is that it’s a great book to glean some insightful things from, but like any book you need to compare it to Scripture.

They Way They Learn – How to Discover and Teach to Your Child’s Strengths

By Cynthia Ulrich Tobias

I remember my 2 biggest takeaways from this book when I read it the first time about 12 years ago. As I read about my learning style, I was amazed to know that there’s others out there like me! Then as I read about my husband’s style, I was even more amazed that there’s people out there like him! I recalled an analogy that hit me like a ton of bricks when I first read it and was delighted to find it as I reread the book: “It’s almost like the AR has an invisible antenna up at all times, scanning the atmosphere for trouble spots. If there is conflict or strife between personalities, it is almost impossible for the AR to concentrate on learning.” This explanation was spot on for me.

While this book emphasizes learning, I have found the concepts in it useful for inter-personal interactions, and not just in the educational realm. However I do think it’s great one to help you know how you learn best, or to help others. As a mom, and homeschooling at that, I found it interesting to read this now that my kids are older. I’ve seen ways that they use their styles in their learning. One of my kids listens to instrumental music while doing school. They thrive on questions that have exact right and wrong answers. The other child does well with big picture questions and more flexibility.

If you’re looking for another great book on learning, I loved Learning How to Learn.

What have you read recently? Would you recommend it?

  1. I just finished Rediscovering Christmas by A. J. Sherrill and thought it was excellent. I really appreciated his insights and it has been a lovely complement to my other advent readings.

    1. Nice! My mom, sister and sister-in-laws are doing an advent book right now too, it’s called Wonder in the Waiting.
