Frugal Five – Meal Prep, Goodwill & Garden

We’ve done the same thing with our daughter, that my parents did with me when I got my first job. If she wants to buy a lunch while at work, it comes out of her bank account. But if she wants to pack a lunch from the food we have at home, that’s free to her. When she first started the job and was getting used to the new rhythm, I would often make food for her, but I realized that it’d be good for her to eventually do this herself, as learning to prep your own food for work is a good skill to have. So the other day when she had a day off, I suggested we do some meal prep. I cooked up the meat, and she made rice and stir-fried it with the meat and some broccoli.

This tower of rice might seem repetitive, but this girl has never tired of rice in her life.

My daughter had several items of clothing she wanted to send off to Goodwill. I went through them and found a few things for myself, including a dress of hers that I’ve always loved. It’s much more my style than hers, so I think I’ll get a lot more use out of it.

Its been a while since I had a good long Goodwill shop and I was itching to go. So when my husband and son were going to be away, and my daughter had to drive up for her last art class, I rode along with her and had her take me to Goodwill while she went in for her final critique. I found a few items for us personally and some for reselling. I had grabbed up multiple items that I could’ve sold for profit, but I’m really trying to limit myself to only buying things that will make $20 or more. Maybe a $10 profit if it’s really easy to photograph and package up. So I weeded through it and kept 3 things: an Eileen Fisher Dress, new with tags Vans sweatpants, and a sweater that might be Ralph Lauren. These bear sweaters go for big bucks, but the one I picked up didn’t have a single tag, so I’m not sure if it’s Ralph Lauren, or a Ralph Lauren wanna be. Anyways, I got home and was able to get all three listed that afternoon.

I skipped a day of waterning the garden because the rain did that chore for me! 🙂

My husband came home with a bunch of plants that were on sale: sage, a dessert willow, shasta daisies, lantana, peppers, and another basil variety.

What frugal things have you been up to?

  1. It feels SO good to have a stockpile of meals prepped and ready to go.

    And that sweater is adorable!
