Follow Me to Alaska – “A true story of one couple’s journey from a cul-de-sac in El Paso, Texas, to an off-grid cabin in the wilderness of Alaska.”

By Ann Parker

This book was extra fun to read, because I got to meet the author before hand! The library held an event where she came and spoke, so I attended it and enjoyed the refreshments while hearing her talk about her adventures in Alaska. I purchased both her books, which she signed for me, and I got a picture with her…..which I cannot find now! I must’ve accidentally deleted it…you’re gonna just have to believe me that I really did meet her in person!

I finished the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fun to crawl into bed at night and feel like I was actually diving into Alaska. I came away with 2 main thoughts:

1. Even though she moved from Texas to Alaska, therefore was still in the same country, so much about moving to a new place resonated with me. While the challenges she faced were different than the challenges I’ve faced overseas, it was shocking how much I could still relate to them.

2. I’ve always thought I’d like to visit Alaska, but never live there. After reading her book, I decided I’m not as opposed to it as before. I can now see how people could learn to love it. I still love a warm climate mind you, but if I needed to move there, I think I could learn to appreciate what it has to offer.

Here’s a quote that I appreciated:

“Life was harder for us in many ways, but we were enjoying life, and each other, so much more. Shon mentioned that we were more appreciative of a trip to the grocery store, a good night’s rest, and a warm house. When his machine was finally cool, we made the last five miles of trail, happy to be together. And content to make it to our cabin on Cub Lake.” Pg.136
