Even When….

….grumpy

We talk about praising God even when we’re in valleys. We sing about worshiping Him even when everything around us is dark. We declare our loyalty even when no one else is following Christ.

But what about grumpiness?

I mean, it doesn’t seem as severe an emotion as say devastation. I feel grumpy a lot more frequently than I feel devastated. And I rarely sing praises when I’m having a grumpy day. In fact I’m not usually even thinking about God. I’m thinking about how messy the house is, what I need to remember to write down on the grocery list, wondering why that person won’t take the blame for what they did, wish I could sleep in longer, and a myriad of other things.

Honesty when things are deeply tough, I’m more intentional of saying, “God I trust you!” I think of the time we couldn’t find the medicine my husband needed. It seemed it was nowhere in the country and his malaria wasn’t going to go away by itself. I was at the bottom of the barrel, and I looked to God.

But when I’m just irritated, annoyed, and kind of “blah”, I’m more likely to just keep going on in my grumbly state and not look up to Him. I guess because I don’t feel as desperate, or as hopeless. But I can choose to praise Him in every single emotion I might feel, even the blah ones.

I don’t know why but it can be harder for me to praise Him in the mundane feelings than even the extremely hard feelings. But I want to be determined to praise Him in all the feelings.

This was a reminder to myself today…because it started off as grump-day.
