Frugal Five – Garden Club & the Garden

Okay, my first frugal thing, has actually cost me $60 so far, and may never be a money saver, but I hope it produces friendships and knowledge! Last week, I paid my dues and officially became a member of a local garden club ($40). Then bought a t-shirt ($20). I’m excited about a plant and seed swap they’re planning!

This last water bill was the highest I think it’s ever been! It’s no wonder as it’s been so hot and dry and we’ve been watering the garden and spraying the dirt for Bruno to cool off in. But we made one change, and I’m hoping that’ll be reflected on the next water bill. Our RO water system dumps water as it filters. I don’t know how or why it does, this but it’s part of the process. This week my husband rigged it up, so that the dumped water goes outside into a barrel, instead of wasted. We can then use this water to supplement the garden water.

We weren’t getting our cherry tomatoes eaten fast enough, so I froze some. I’ll probably use these in a sauce or something.

As I’ve mentioned before our sweet potato plants are taking over above ground, I hope that means they’re growing below ground too! I know that their leaves are good to eat (we ate them in a palm oil sauce over rice in Africa), but I often just don’t get around to cooking them. Then I had an idea, I could pick a bunch of leaves and steam them, then just re-heat individual servings throughout the week. So I did just that and this morning my husband and I had some sweet potato greens with our breakfast.

While a lot of the garden is looking sad, the peppers are popping out their fruit! They’re pretty small sized peppers, but still very edible!

If you have a good sweet potato leaf recipe, please share!
