Makes Me Miss You

It’s strange the things that make my heart ache for West Africa:

  • Seeing the jar of beurre de karite (shea butter) getting low.
  • My husband brought home a small chest freezer. When I opened it up and looked inside, the interior of it reminded me of my beloved freezer in Africa and I started feeling misty-eyed…over a freezer!
  • The thrill of joy I got when my husband showed me the bag of maggi cubes he ordered for me! Seriously, why don’t Americans make more use out of this little cube of flavor used all over the world?
  • Anytime I find wax print clothes at Goodwill and I’m tempted to buy them…because it’s African! You wouldn’t believe how often I find this happens!

I know I’ll keep missing West Africa, but it’s odd to me the random things that hit me.

I miss the colorfulness of Africa.

I loved walking down to this little Friday market.

  1. Isn’t it strange the things that end up being memory triggers.

I love the colourful clothing. They are such vibrant cultures – engaging music, laughter, and bright clothes.

My husband spent time in Africa years ago (and was set to visit Rwanda this summer for a tentmaking ministry; that may not go ahead as planned given the recent unrest) and through him I’ve learned that anyone who goes to Africa always leaves a part of their heart there. I’m really looking forward to when I get to visit the continent for the first time.

A few weeks after my mother retired as a nurse they went to Liberia for 4 months. She worked with pregnant and new mothers and my father taught Bible teaching (he was a pastor for several decades) to travelling local ministers. They went twice before health prevented a return trip. I’d love to do something like that each year in retirement. We’ll see what doors God opens and what ones He chooses to leave shut.

    1. We moved to West Africa almost 10 years ago. We do hope to move back, but feel the need to be Stateside for now.
