Frugal Five – All About Food

Even though I’ve contemplated looking for a job outside the home (other than ebay reselling and helping my husband’s business), there are advantages to being home. For example, I have time to cook. The more from scratch something is, usually the cheaper it is and healthier.

I like to have Cliff bars for something quick for my teen to grab on his way out to Taekwondo, but they really aren’t that cheap. Today I tried a new granola bar recipe. As you can see in the photo they turned out a little crumbly (I didn’t use parchment paper like the recipe called for), but they seem less sticky than the other kind I make.

I also made an egg bake (eggs, cottage cheese, and some other cheeses baked in a greased pan). We had some of them for lunch and the rest I froze. I like to cut them into squares for putting on a sandwich. These are a high-protein option, also great for pre-workouts.

And I made another batch of oven roasted okra with okra from the garden. This is so easy and much healthier than deep frying it.

In an attempt to use some aging milk (you know the kind that you don’t really want to drink, but it’s fine in baked goods?), I made a double batch of whole wheat oven pancakes. Unfortunately it didn’t use up all the milk, but at least it made a dent in it.

Since I had the oven going, I just kept it going and baked 10 pounds of potatoes(Why I Bake a Large Amount of Potatoes), turkey meatballs and some chicken thighs and legs. Nobody can complain about being hungry in my house…at least for a few days anyways!

As I was spending all this time cooking, it reminded me how much savings there really is in cooking. And on top of that it’s easier to decrease sodium and sugar and increase fiber.

How have you saved lately? Any good high-protein snack ideas, I’m on the look out for quick, but healthy snack options.
